Traveling In The City

Guaguas-Caro Publicos-Motoconchos
Try Walking!  That's right, almost all hotels are located in populated area where within a block or two you will find stores, restaurants, bars and local attractions.  Keep in mind most streets and intersections do not have signs to find your way back.  Travel with a friend or new acquaintance especially at night.  The Dominican Republic is relatively safe, but crime does exist and you should take reasonable precautions to prevent yourself from becoming a target.  Do not wear flashy jewelry, expensive clothes or carry anymore money than you would need for a day.  Most hotels provide safes in the room to protect your belongings.  If you need to travel more than a block or two from your hotel consider using a taxi, or one of the other public transportation methods, such as, Guaguas, Caro Publicos or even  Motoconchos.  Taxi's are abundant throughout most large cities and tourist towns and are the most spacious and comfortable means to travel.  Taxi drivers charge a fixed rate and not a metered rate and charge considerably higher rates than other forms of public transportation.  Do not get in a taxi without first agreeing on price and if it is in dollars or pesos.  Fares are usually non-negotiable, but you may get a better rate if several taxi's are present and/or you choose a taxi driver with an older car.  Guaguas are a very popular means of getting around the city or even from one town or village to the next for local residence. They are usually 12 passenger mini-vans that will hold up to eighteen.  They have no specific stops along their route and will usually honk their horn when approaching to see if you want a ride.  The cost is around RD $25 (85 cents), have correct change, enjoy the ride, don't be surprised if at some point, someone you just met is sitting in your lap. She might be holding a chicken too.  Last run is usually early evening.
Caro Publicos are public taxis with signs on top of their cars indicating their route.  These are small cars who carry four passengers comfortably but have a tendency to overfill the vehicle with passengers much like the Guaguas, cost are around RD $30 (1 Dollar).  If a stuffy, crowded vehicle is not your cup of tea then you are a prime candidate for the Motoconchos.
When you first arrive to a Dominican Republic city you will be amazed at the number of motorcycles bustling around the streets, this is one of the main forms of transportation and not uncommon to see an entire family on one or even a washing machine tied to the seat behind the driver.  For around 20-30 pesos take the Motorcycle Taxi (Motoconchos), it is the quickest means to get around the city.  Keep in mind prices normally double after dark.
