Food and Restaurants

The Dominican Republic has a widely diverse mix of culinary specialties.  The combination of Taino Indian, Spanish and African cuisines represent the Island's popular dishes.  Much of the Dominicans diet is made up of meat, rice, beans, vegetables and stews.  Most vacationers to the Dominican Republic will stay in one of the All Inclusive resorts where buffet style meals are offered in a variety of French, English, and Italian cuisines are prepared and miss out on real Dominican prepared cuisine.  To have a real Dominican meal you must venture out into the cities and dine in local restaurants.  La Bandera, is the national dish, and is made up of white rice, red beans, fried plantains, vegetables, and meat either boiled, grilled or fried if chicken.  Depending on which restaurant you choose, meals could be anywhere from $2.00 to $50.00 with meals usually around $10.00.  Rule of thumb, if your on a budget and looking to eat in inexpensive places, eat where local Dominicans do,  not where you will find an abundance of tourists.  Get away from the tourist towns and see the Dominican Republic for what it really is; an Island paradise full of delicious cuisines and interesting, friendly people.
