| The official currency in the Dominican Republic is the Peso (DOP). However, if you travel to most cities including tourist towns they will except the US dollar and sometimes even preferred. Having said that it is a good idea not to arrive in the Dominican Republic without having some Dominican Pesos (RD). Check with your local Federal Reserve bank to find out how to exchange money before your trip. Do not carry large sums of US currency abroad (but, do carry some), instead carry travel checks, ATM cards and Credit Cards. ATM cards are widely accepted and you will find ATM machines in most cities and tourists towns to withdraw pesos from your account. Ensure your ATM debit card carries the "Cirrus", "Maestro" or "Plus" logo to use it in the Dominican Republic. There are many options for you to exchange money from US Dollar"s or Euro's into Pesos, from your Hotel, street vendors, banks to exchange booths (Casa De Cambio) you will not find it difficult exchange money. Street vendors will normally approach you ask if you need to exchange money. Keep in mind, Hotels and tourist areas may not give you the best exchange rates. Most money exchange counters can exchange US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros and UK Pound Sterling into Pesos. If traveling from a different country our advise is to exchange your money into one of the above before trip.
